Application
Single-layer taping systems serve a wide range of industries and product types. The following are the primary application areas:
- LAN & Data Cables: Applying foil shields (aluminum/polyester laminate) around twisted pairs for Cat5e, Cat6, and Cat6A cables ensures reliable signal integrity and EMI attenuation.
- Coaxial Cables: Single-pass tape wrapping around the dielectric core before the braid layer provides a controlled impedance environment.
- Automotive Wiring Harnesses: PVC or fabric tape wrapping on bundled wires offers abrasion resistance and organizes harness routing in engine bays.
- Medical Tubing & Catheters: Controlled, low-tension single-layer wrapping of PTFE or polyimide tape provides lubricity and chemical resistance without distorting flexible tubing.
- Aerospace & Defense Wiring: High-temperature tapes such as PTFE or glass cloth are applied around individual wires to meet MIL-spec requirements for flame and abrasion resistance.
- Optical Fiber Cables: Buffer tubes or ribbons receive a moisture barrier tape (e.g., water-swellable tape) wrapped precisely for outdoor cable protection.
- Flexible Conduit Manufacturing: A single layer of steel or aluminum strip is wound helically over a mandrel to form semi-rigid conduit structures.
- Power Cables (Low Voltage): Binder tape application over stranded conductors holds the lay and maintains roundness before insulation extrusion.
Advantage
- Simple Operation: Single-head design minimizes operator learning curve. Most parameters are set via HMI with no manual mechanical adjustments required during production.
- Cost-Effective: Lower capital investment compared to double or multi-layer systems. Ideal for manufacturers who only require single-layer coverage.
- High Speed: Capable of reaching 200 m/min with servo-controlled tension, supporting high-throughput production without compromising wrap quality.
- Precise Overlap Control: Programmable helix angle ensures consistent overlap percentage across the entire cable run, critical for specification compliance.
- Wide Tape Compatibility: Handles metallic foils, polyester films, paper tapes, PTFE tapes, woven glass tapes, and water-blocking tapes from a single machine platform.
- Low Maintenance: Fewer rotating components than multi-layer systems. Standard maintenance intervals are long, and spare parts are widely available.
- Quick Changeover: Modular taping head design allows rapid product size changes, supporting flexible, high-mix production environments.
- Compact Footprint: Smaller machine footprint than double or multi-layer alternatives, fitting easily into tight production floor layouts.
Material & Structure
Frame & Housing: The main frame is fabricated from thick-walled welded steel sections, finished with industrial-grade powder coating for corrosion resistance and long service life. Precision machining ensures alignment accuracy of the taping head to the product axis.
Taping Head: The rotating taping head is the core component. It is manufactured from high-strength aluminum alloy for a lightweight, low-inertia design that allows rapid acceleration to operating speed. The tape guide rollers are hard-chrome plated or ceramic-coated to resist wear and prevent tape damage.
Tension Control Unit: An independent servo-driven tension control arm maintains consistent tape tension throughout the reel. Dancer arm sensors provide real-time feedback to the servo controller, compensating for reel diameter changes as tape is consumed.
Drive System: AC servo motors with harmonic or spur gear reducers provide smooth, vibration-free drive to the taping head. The line synchronization control links taping head speed to the haul-off or capstan speed to maintain the programmed helix angle precisely.
Guide Tooling: Carbide-tipped or polished stainless steel inlet/outlet guides center the product through the machine and protect sensitive surfaces during high-speed operation.
