Applications
CNC Horizontal Taping Machines are specified in high-volume and technically demanding applications across the global cable industry:
- Medium & High Voltage Power Cables: Applying semi-conductive, insulating, and water-blocking tape layers over MV/HV cable cores in the 10 kV–400 kV voltage class as part of multi-layer insulation system construction.
- Submarine & Offshore Cables: Taping with water-swellable tape, lead or aluminium sheath bedding tape, and anti-corrosion tape over large-diameter submarine cable cores where horizontal handling is essential due to core weight and stiffness.
- Automotive High-Voltage Cables: Applying aluminium-foil shielding tape and protective wrapping over EV traction cables and charging cables in high-volume automotive supply chain environments.
- Armoured & Protected Cables: Wrapping bedding tape (polyester or PVC-coated tape) over cable cores before steel wire or steel tape armour application—ensuring a smooth bed that prevents armour wires cutting into the core.
- Oil & Gas Cables (Umbilicals): Processing hydraulic hose bundles and electrical core assemblies in subsea umbilical cables with multiple layers of binding and barrier tape.
- Railway & Traction Cables: Applying mica-glass tape layers for fire-resistance compliance and PE or XLPE-compatible separation tapes in rolling-stock cable constructions.
- Wind & Solar Energy Cables: Taping UV-protective, moisture-barrier, and anti-tracking tape over DC power cables and inter-array cable cores used in onshore and offshore energy installations.
Advantages
- High-Speed Heavy-Cable Capability: The horizontal configuration supports very large take-up drums (up to 3,000 mm flange diameter) and heavy cable reels, making it the right choice for continuous, high-output power cable production runs where vertical systems would face drum-handling constraints.
- CNC Overlap Compensation During Speed Changes: Unique to CNC-controlled machines, the overlap percentage remains constant through acceleration and deceleration by continuously recalculating taping pitch. This eliminates the characteristic over-overlap at low speed and under-overlap at high speed seen on mechanically geared machines.
- Multi-Head Architecture: Up to six taping heads can operate simultaneously on a single cable pass, applying different tape types—semi-conductive, insulating, moisture-barrier, and armour-bedding—in a single line pass, dramatically reducing work-in-progress and handling damage between processes.
- Modular Head Design: Each taping head is a self-contained servo-driven module that can be removed from the line for off-line maintenance without shutting down other heads, minimising production downtime.
- Comprehensive Process Data: The CNC controller captures tension, speed, overlap, alarm, and machine-status data and correlates it with metre-counter data for every reel produced. This data can be exported as a quality record to meet EN 50289, VDE, or customer-specific QA requirements.
- Wide Tape Compatibility: Handles the widest range of industrial tapes—from 10 mm narrow metallic foils to 200 mm wide paper or woven fabric—without major tooling changes, serving both insulation and mechanical protection taping in one platform.
- Ergonomic Side-Loading: Horizontal orientation allows drum and spool loading from the side without overhead lifting of heavy cable reels, reducing workplace injury risk and integration time with automated drum-handling systems.
Material & Structure
CNC Horizontal Taping Machines are engineered to handle the substantial mechanical loads generated by large tape spools and heavy cable cores over 24/7 production schedules:
- Bed & Frame: Fabricated structural-steel frame, stress-relieved before precision machining of all bearing surfaces. The main bed is designed with a low centre of gravity and wide stance to resist tipping forces from large take-up drums.
- Taping Head Body: Precision-machined ductile iron or steel, with a through-bore sized to the maximum cable diameter. The bore is fitted with a replaceable hardened-steel wear insert at the cable entry and exit points.
- Taping Head Bearings: Double-row angular-contact bearings with a preloaded arrangement, designed for a B10 life of over 50,000 hours at maximum head speed under full tape tension load.
- Tape Spool Spindle Assembly: Heavy-duty cantilevered spindle rated to support tape spools up to 30 kg, with a quick-clamp locking collar and adjustable spool width guide flanges.
- Cable Support Rollers: Fixed and motorised polyurethane-lagged support rollers beneath the cable path prevent core sag for cables up to 200 mm OD. Roller spacing and diameter are calculated to limit core deflection to below 0.5 mm between supports.
- Haul-Off Unit: A motorised caterpillar or dual-belt haul-off with pneumatically adjustable grip force handles cables from 5 mm to 200 mm OD without tooling changes. Line speed measurement is by precision encoder on the haul-off drive roller.
- Safety Guarding: Full-height mesh guarding with safety-interlocked access doors on all taping heads. An emergency-stop trip rope runs the full length of the line for operator safety during threading operations.
